What is the project about?

Purpose

The initial part of the Mathematics in Indigenous Contexts Years 6–8 project that was completed in 2003 provided an opportunity to develop an understanding of the issues faced by Aboriginal students, and their schools, as they make the transition from Year 6 into Year 7. The project used the development of culturally and contextually appropriate multi-stage teaching units for Mathematics as the strategy to engage teachers and community. To achieve this, schools, teachers and Aboriginal Education Assistants (AEAs) were supported by experienced teachers and university mentors who acted as critical friends to each school program. They assisted the school teams to engage with the Aboriginal community members in the development of this context-based curriculum. Subsequent years built upon knowledge gained in the first year of the project.

The K–10 scope and continuum that were developed as part of the new K–6 and 7–10 Mathematics syllabuses were also significant in the development of the multi-stage teaching and learning materials.

Project schools

The project chose to work in rural primary and high schools with a significant enrolment of Aboriginal students. Schools at Gilgandra and Coonabarabran accepted the invitation to participate in 2003. While the teachers at Gilgandra had worked on a previous Mathematics program, there had not been any such previous collaboration between the Coonabarabran schools.

In 2004 Warren Central School, Quirindi High School and Quirindi Primary School became involved in the project. The schools at Gilgandra continued with different teachers.

In 2005 both the primary and high schools in Gilgandra continued their participation and the Stage 3 teachers at Quirindi Primary also continued.
