School and Aboriginal community context

A special people, a special place was written by Matthew Knowles, Head Teacher English at Gilgandra High School, which is a rural high school. The student population of 370 students includes a large percentage of children from farming families as well as an Aboriginal student enrolment of 12 percent.

Matthew has worked in the NSW public school system for 19 years and has been actively involved in the development of teaching programs and resources to support English curricula. He has a specific interest in exploring effective pedagogies for Aboriginal students.

Gilgandra lies on the boundary between Wiradjurri and Gamilaraay country. The local Aboriginal community is diverse and active and the student population is very well situated, therefore, to learn about the local community and its Aboriginal people and heritage. In the development of this unit recognition must be given to the following people for their support and guidance:

  • Mary Solomon, Aboriginal Education Assistant at Gilgandra High School
  • Tanya Moore
  • the Gilgandra Community Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group.
