School and Aborignial Community Context

The unit of work ‘My Girragundji’ was written in 2009 by Ellie Donovan, a teacher at Corrimal High School. Corrimal High is a comprehensive high school located in the Illawarra South East Region, and is part of the Wollongong North Community of Schools. The school has a student population of approximately 520, including 47 Aboriginal students. The school has an Aboriginal support teacher two days per week who focuses on improving attendance, literacy, numeracy and retention, and developing employability skills and leadership capabilities. The school has an ongoing relationship with Boori Pryor, who visits the school on an annual basis to work with students. Boori Pryor engages students in activities that help to create a strong sense of connection to their Aboriginality. This unit uses texts written by Boori Pryor and the timing of the unit coincides with Boori Pryor’s visit to Corrimal High.
