How did it happen?

The Aboriginal Perspectives in Science Project began in 2002 as a joint venture between the Board of Studies NSW, the NSW Department of Education and Training, and the Catholic Education Commission NSW. Early in 2003, representatives of these groups met and shared their experiences and expectations of the project. A mapping was undertaken of potential syllabus links, and criteria were drawn up for the involvement of schools, the Aboriginal community, teachers and mentors. Following this, four groups in different regions of NSW were formed. Each group met regularly to develop context-based units of work and/or teaching sequences with learning and assessment activities appropriate to the needs and interests of their students. Emphasis was always on collaborative partnership with the Aboriginal community and between the members of each group. Throughout 2003, teachers developed the materials included in the resource and trialled them with their Stage 4 or 5 students.
