What barriers did you encounter in trying to undertake this project?

Some elders I spoke to talked of previous experiences that had not been positive in working on other projects and were slightly unsure of what to expect from this one. It is extremely important that all input be acknowledged and they should be shown the final product for their approval before it is used in the classroom.

Not having enough knowledge of the culture has been a barrier. I had to do extensive reading and also talk to some people from the Aboriginal community, for example, the local Elders and the Aboriginal consultants. Time and resources were also the main barriers. This project has taken almost a year to do. Although funding was provided, getting relief from teaching proved to be quite difficult.

It is important to have clear indicators when developing units of work, so that you know what you want the students to know. Discuss units with the Aboriginal community first. Put programs together with consultation and collaboration. Make sure Aboriginal perspectives are clearly understood and taught by teachers. Also, be aware of possible cultural differences or cultural barriers when addressing Aboriginal perspectives.
