Margaret Simoes
Margaret, can you tell me what would be some helpful hints that you would give teachers for starting in this area?
If a teacher is attempting to make contact with the local community for the very first time, these would be some suggestions to get you started:
Firstly, ask around in your school because there's always someone that's already made some links.
Secondly, I would suggest contacting your local office, within your Department or Catholic Education Office.
Thirdly, I would think about the contacts that other schools may have already established as well.
And fourthly, I would think about the key organisations that may be in your local community and looking in your local telephone book or curriculum documents; they usually have them listed.
Margaret, some of us are fearful that we'll say or do the wrong thing. What can you tell us about that?
Well certainly don't be fearful, because we're not going to hurt you for a start. I would suggest that you just be yourself. Be yourself and have it worked out exactly what it is you want to ask the community person. Because they're going to be asking you questions as well. Be yourself; be genuine and sincere in the way you'd like them to be involved in the school.
