Plan it: a native garden/walk

School and Community Context

This unit of work, Plan it, a native garden/walk, was written by Gary Worthy, Head Teacher TAS at Vincentia High School.

Vincentia High School is a comprehensive high school with an Indigenous population of over 11 percent. Many of the students come from the ACT territory of Jervis Bay and live, or are related to community members, at Wreck Bay.

Vincentia is in a coastal rural setting in the southern area of the Shoalhaven River valley approximately 20km south of Nowra. It is part of the Yuin nation and is very near the border of the Dhurga and Dharawal language groups. The school currently teaches Dhurga as the mandatory Stage 4 100-hour language course to all students in Year 8.

Located close to Booderee National Park the school has access to, and makes use of, the expertise of the Indigenous National Park Rangers and their knowledge of the local flora and fauna. The willingness of the local Indigenous community to share their knowledge of language, culture and country assists the successful implementation of this unit.
