Every classroom at Broulee reinforces the language teaching by having a Dhurga wall where resources are always on show.

Sample 2

Each students keeps a Dhurga workbook. This becomes their own learner's guide, with information such as the sounds and spelling system and a growing word list. Students also place worksheets and carry out other assessment tasks in the booklet, which the teachers can refer to at various times throughout the year.

Encourage and celebrate the knowledge of Aboriginal languages that Aboriginal teachers and students have, and allow for regional variations – they make a language richer!

'A perfect example was when we did the animal names. Now, I put the English names of the animals up on the board, and said to the kids, "I wonder if anybody might even know any of these names." And I've got this one little Koori boy in my class and poor old [C] is always in trouble anyway, has a bit of trouble with numeracy, not too bad in language or literacy. Anyway I put up the word "dog" and I said, "Does anybody think they might know the meaning of the Dhurga word for dog?" Well [C's] hand was up in a minute and he says to me, "Mirriga, Mrs Boyenga". And I said, "Well done [C]," and he's sitting there like a big rooster, real proud. And then he says to me, "But sometimes my Nan just says mirri". And I said "Well that's great [C]," and the other kids are sitting there and they're like "Well, how did he know that Mrs B?" And I said, "Well in case you haven't noticed, [C] is a bit like myself, he's an Aboriginal person and his grandparents and his parents would probably use a lot of the language in their home like we use". And it was just that one minute where my black kid had it over every white kid in that room and there were 60 non-Aboriginal kids, you know, and it made me feel so proud. That's what we said right from the word go – this will be the only time where our kids will have it over the other kids, will come into their own.'
