The approach to teaching literacy
Reading to Learn is a literacy teaching program designed to enable all learners to read and write at levels appropriate to their age, grade and area of study. It has been developed with teachers of primary, secondary and tertiary students of all backgrounds, across Australia and internationally, to support reading and writing across the curriculum. The teaching strategies have been proven to enable weak readers to rapidly learn to read and write at grade appropriate levels, and advanced students to develop language understandings well beyond their independent competence (Rose & Acevedo 2006, Culican 2006, McCrae et al 2000). They draw on principles of scaffolded learning (Wells 1999), educational linguistics and genre approaches to writing (Martin 1993, 1999, 2001), and sociology of education (Bernstein 1996, Rose 1999), in a form that is accessible, practical and meets the needs of teachers and students (Martin & Rose 2005, Rose 2005a, Rose & Acevedo 2006, Rose, Gray & Cowey 1999, Rose, Lui-Chivizhe, McKnight & Smith 2004).
